The Great American Smokeout® IS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH
Local Smoking Cessation Program Available

Marianna, FL, November 8, 2007. The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Great American Smokeout® is Thursday, November 15th. According to the ACS’ website, the event challenges people to stop using tobacco and raises awareness of the many effective ways to quit for good. Many Americans who smoke observe this day by smoking less or quitting smoking for the day.
Local help is here if you are inclined to mark this day as a next step in your life to quit smoking. The Big Bend Area Health Education Center offers “Quit Smoking Now” classes. A curriculum developed by ex-smokers for those who want to become ex-smokers themselves.
Brigitta Nuccio, MPAS, PA-C, Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist, leads the classroom instruction and provides the one-on-one consultation. She is a Physician Assistant, Smoking Cessation Consultant and the Quit Smoking Now Class Facilitator for the Big Bend Area Health Education Center, a non-profit organization. She grew-up in Cottondale, graduated from Florida State University and the University of Florida.
The next six-session class begins January 14, 2008 at 6pm in the Jackson Hospital Cafeteria Board Room on the Ground Floor. Jackson Hospital is located at 4250 Hospital Drive, Marianna, FL. The cost is only $15 for all six sessions. Contact Ms. Nuccio at (850) 693 – 0789 or (850) 718 – 2562 to register or for more information.
In addition to the classroom setting, one-on-one counseling sessions are also available free of charge by appointment in the Jackson Hospital Hudnall Building, Suite 208. The Hudnall building is adjacent to the main Hospital building.
Smoking causes more than 400,000 US deaths annually. More people die from smoking related disease every year than car accidents, alcohol, suicide, homicide, AIDS, illegal drugs, and fires combined! The US Surgeon General has declared that cigarette smoking is the chief, single, avoidable cause of death in our society and the most important public health issue of our time.
Jackson Hospital’s mission is to provide the highest quality healthcare to those it serves, enhancing life in a compassionate environment. The hospital counts Jackson County and neighboring counties as its service area. Jackson Hospital, a top 100 Hospital in the nation according to Thomson Healthcare, is the only Florida hospital in its size category to receive the 2006 Performance Improvement Leaders award. The Hospital provides in-patient, out-patient, and emergency care services from its main location in Marianna at 4250 Hospital Drive.
