JACKSON HOSPITAL FAST-TRACKS PATIENTS
IN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Concurrent Patient Care for Emergency and Non-emergency Care Situations
Marianna, FL, October 17, 2007. Jackson Hospital sees 80 patients a day in its Emergency Department (ED). The ED, like all hospital Emergency Departments, is backlogged with patients who have non-emergency conditions. Therefore, the care team and ED Physicians at Jackson Hospital’s Emergency Department have built a better patient flow process, according to Eddie Duke, RN, the Department’s Nursing Director. The new process is called “Fast Track” which begins October 18, 2007.
Although an individual’s health situation may seem like an emergency; from a clinical viewpoint, the health condition may be a lesser, non-emergency one. Emergency Departments use a technique called “triaging” which prioritizes care by severity. Jackson Hospital’s Fast Track process takes triaging one step farther: it steers non-emergency patients on a separate care track from those patients who have emergency situations.
Fast Track hours of operation correspond with the time of day when Jackson Hospital’s ED is at its busiest: Monday through Friday 3:00pm until 9:30pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 9:30pm.
