COMMUNITY EDUCATED ON HEART DISEASE
DURING JACKSON HOSPITAL FOUNDATION’S
HEART MONTH LUNCH & LEARN

Marianna, FL, February 18, 2008. – February is National Heart Awareness Month. Keeping with the spirit to promote Heart Disease awareness was the Jackson Hospital Foundation’s Heart Month Lunch and Learn held February 13th. The luncheon featured Heart-healthy fare and a special Heart-to-heart talk by Dr. Steven Spence. The event, held in the Community Room of the Hudnall Building on Jackson Hospital campus, is one of several special events the Jackson Hospital Foundation sponsors according to Jackson Hospital Foundation Executive Director Jill Miller.

“Since February is a month devoted to human emotion, symbolized by the heart, there could not be a better time for us to thank our donors with this luncheon and provide them with a healthy heart educational program,” says Ms. Miller. She adds, “We love our donors and appreciate their contributions to advancing healthcare in Jackson County.”

Steven Spence, M.D., of Internal Medicine Associates, Marianna, was the special guest speaker whose topic was Vascular Disease. He intrigued the audience by making an entrance in his running attire, complete with running shoes and shorts. It was his way to emphasize the importance of physical activity and being dedicated to setting aside time for it. He indicated that Wednesday afternoons were his time devoted to running; and that immediately after his presentation, he was going for his run.

Dr. Spence told the audience that Vascular Disease is the #1 killer of Americans! The nuggets from his presentation were:
1. If you smoke, you “just gotta quit!”
2. You need to maintain a healthy weight, if overweight, you need to lose it
3. You need to exercise – aerobic, weight-bearing, walking goal of 10 miles per week.
Dr. Spence emphasized that the biggest secret in modern medicine is “a good Primary Care Physician whose job it is to convince patients to do what’s best for them.”

With Seventy-eight in attendance, the event was sold-out. Ms. Miller exclaimed, “We were excited to have standing-room only attendance at this important community education event.”

Other annual Foundation events are the Spring Gala and the James T. Cook, Jr., Golf Tournament. The Foundation also sponsors a Holiday Wine Tasting in conjunction with the Marianna Rotary Club. Please contact Jill Miller, Amy Milton or Georganne Sherrel at 718-2601 for more information on how you can volunteer, participate or contribute to Foundation events.
