Felicia Lein, MS, CCC-SLP, Presents Part 2 of Swallowing Concerns
At Monday’s Parkinson’s Support Group Meeting

February 19, 2008, Marianna, FL. Each month, Jackson Hospital sponsors the Parkinson’s Support Group that meets at noon in the Education Classroom of the hospital’s main building located at 4250 Hospital Drive, Marianna. On Monday, February 25th, Felicia Lein, MS, CCC-SLP, returns for Part 2 of her presentation on Swallowing Concerns in those with Parkinson’s.

A person’s ability to swallow is often impacted by Parkinson’s Disease because it is a degenerative disease and the swallowing muscles and laryngeal function are affected. A swallow study is important to those living with Parkinson’s and an initial study provides baseline information, even if patient has not reported swallowing problems. If a patient reports difficulty with swallowing, the study helps the Speech-Language Therapist assess what phase of swallowing is affected, diagnose the problem and then treat it so a person can safely eat by mouth for as long as possible.

During Monday’s presentation, Felicia will be demonstrating assessment of swallowing through video fluoroscopic study (Modified Barium Swallow) to identify normal swallowing functions and those impacted by neurological impairment. Digital Fluoroscopic studies are performed almost daily by the Jackson Hospital Radiology Department. In fact, over 800 of these studies have been performed at Jackson Hospital since obtaining the technology.

Felicia Lein has a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from the Florida State University, Tallahassee. She has a minor in Audiology and holds certification in Gerontology from the Claude Pepper Institute on Aging. Felicia moved to Marianna when she was 7 years old and graduated from Chipola College and Marianna High School.

Felicia is currently employed with Signature HealthCARE as the Area Director of Rehabilitation for the North Florida area. Prior to this role, she served as Speech-Language Therapist with Jackson Hospital Therapy for 8 years.
