Jackson Hospital Receives Smoking Cessation Grant
Advances tobacco cessation and counseling services to employees and community
Marianna, FL, April 5, 2010. Jackson Hospital was recently awarded a grant from the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Tobacco Prevention, to further its goal of providing tobacco cessation and counseling services to its employees, their families and the community. In Jackson County, almost 30% of those 18-44 years old and 27% of those 45-64 years old are tobacco users.
Jackson Hospital will use the grant funds to develop a comprehensive tobacco cessation education and counseling program with the assistance of the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC). Research indicates a clear linkage between tobacco use and its contributing risk factors for chronic conditions such as coronary heart disease and stroke.
The once-weekly class series begins Thursday, April 8th and runs until May 13th. Class starts at noon and lasts until 1pm. There is no cost to attend and lunch is provided. Free Nicotine-Replacement Therapy is available for class participants.
Class size is limited to the first 20 participants. For more information and to enroll in this class series, contact Karen Talley, Jackson Hospital, (850) 718-2842.
Additional courses will be offered throughout the rest of 2010 and announced separately.
Brigitta Nuccio, PA-C, provides the course instruction using a curriculum developed by ex-smokers. Scott Owen, RRT, Jackson Hospital Director of Cardio/Pulmonary, and Karen Talley, Jackson Hospital Education Assistant, manage the Hospital’s grant.
